Feeling appreciated at work

I consider myself blessed. My boss is quick to let his employees know that they're appreciated. That's an uncommon quality, and I'm fortunate to have him as a boss.

That wasn't the way it was with one of my previous employers, though. We were overworked, underpaid and woefully underappreciated. The work hours and pay scale were caused by economic necessity; however, I think the company could have shown a lot more appreciation toward its employees. This was especially true in my case, as I was frequently forced to put my life on hold and work obscene hours.

Mind you, some of the bosses were appreciative. My first general manager over there was a wonderful and much beloved gent. We were severely disappointed when he was forced out of that position into a more nominal role, and we were saddened when he was forced to leave.

The second general manager was somewhat appreciative as well, and so was this one project manager. Not everyone was that way, though. In particular, one VP was habitually abusive and strongly disliked throughout the company. He seemed to think that the best way to get results was to yell at people, ridicule them, and threaten them until they produced results. How foolish he was.

I'm so glad that things are different now.
