How can you be so educated, and yet...?

I used to do some volunteer work with an organization for which the assistant director was an MBA-holder named Debbie. At some point, Deb decided to take over the publication of the organization's newsletter. Nothing wrong with that, but Deb was a rather problematic individual.

For one thing, she insisted that every paragraph should have at least three sentences in it. Heaven knows where she picked up this rule. She acts like she has never read a newspaper, in which paragraphs are often just one sentence long. Similary, novels and essays frequently have one- or two-sentence essays.

There were two MDs and one PhD on this organization's board of directors. Deb insisted that only the MDs should be referred to as "Doctor" in the newsletter, on the grounds that only MDs are "real doctors." Apparently, she has never heard of Dr. Martin Luther King, or she never addressed any of her professors as "Doctor."

I just don't get it. How can you have a prestigious graduate degree -- an MBA -- and yet fail to grasp such basics? I'd expect any diligent high school student to understand such things.
