A big guy afraid of spiders

I ran across my ex-roommate a few weeks ago -- a tremendously difficult person with all sorts of personality aberrations. Let's just say that he's a strange guy. He's horribly overweight, yet in complete denial about his weight. He would routinely blow off work when he was a grad student, and he was almost pathologically shy.

Oh, and he was afraid of spiders. Tremendously and ridiculously afraid. Never mind that he weighed over 300 pounds. Never mind that he knew full well that house spiders aren't going to do any damage. He was still frightened to death of them.

So when the subject of tarantulas came up, he freaked out. Go figure.

Now, I have a few fears myself. Fears that are of a rather personal nature. I always ensure that these are rational fears though, and when I find myself fearing something illogically, I confront that fear.
